Lopez Research in conjunction with The Software Industry Association (SIIA) recently surveyed 106 marketing executives about their company’s use of email, mobile marketing and social media to build their brand, gain leads, and improve customer support. The findings were quite interesting. While social media is driving a small portion of revenue and engagement today, almost 90% of companies believe social media marketing will benefit business. As a result, many firms are investing in numerous social media channels that range from blogs, to Twitter to LinkedIn. The survey results indicate that companies which service B2B firms are as interested in social media as companies that service business to consumer (B2C) firms with roughly 90% of all respondents stating they are using social media marketing. This is a far cry from several years ago where many businesses were questioning the value of social media.

Social media marketing has matured to the point where companies are looking at a mix of quantitative ROI measures such as revenue and web site traffic but also qualitative measures such as brand awareness. Time spent on social media marketing varies widely by companies but many are spending under 10 hours per week on these efforts. To date, most marketers are still managing their social media efforts themselves. While many businesses will continue to do their own posts, Lopez Research expects social media analytics to be an area where many firms will consider purchasing a managed service.

As expected, email marketing continues to be a main marketing tool for a majority of the companies interviewed. Mobile marketing use was low amongst the respondents, which isn’t surprising given that a high percentage of companies surveyed serve the business-to-business (B2B) and business to government (B2G) groups. A majority of the respondents, 88%, stated their primary geographic market is in North America but only 12% of the respondents considered consumers part of their target market segmentation. In general, Lopez Research believes mobile marketing is in its infancy and will experience double-digit growth over the next two years. It will be interesting to see how social media and mobile marketing evolve as tools for B2C and B2B communications.

The House of Representative’s Stop Online Piracy Act and the Senate’s Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act have generated fierce opposition within the technology community. Here are some facts about the bills:

What would SOPA and PIPA do?
The legislation, known as SOPA in the US House of Representatives and PIPA in the Senate, would use court orders to curb access to foreign websites “dedicated to theft” through techniques such as disabling links to those sites.

** They also cut off US-based payments processing for those overseas websites that traffic in stolen content or counterfeit goods.

Why do copyright holders say the law is needed?
Entertainment companies and other copyright holders say many legal copyright remedies aren’t effective against big foreign sites such as PirateBay. They say the bills will help curb online piracy that they claim costs them billions of dollars a year. Technology companies say they too oppose such piracy but argue that the proposed laws go too far.

What is the current status of the bills?
The White House weighed in on January 14 with objections to the legislation, particularly a provision that would have required Internet service providers such as a Verizon Communications and Comcast Corp to cut off access to infringing sites through a technology known as DNS blocking.

In the days before the White House statement, backers of both bills had said they planned to move away from those provisions. The Senate bill is scheduled for a vote on January 24, although some supporters of the bill have asked to postpone that vote. The House bill is still before the Judiciary Committee.

Why do technology companies oppose the bills?
Technology companies say the legislation would undermine an existing law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and its “safe harbor” provisions for websites and others that act in good faith in their handling of third-party content on their sites. Content companies say the bills simply fill gaps in the DMCA and wouldn’t affect the safe harbor provisions.

** Technology companies express concerns that the legislation would encourage frivolous litigation. Content companies believe the difficulty of squeezing large payments out of illegal overseas sites would discourage frivolous litigation.

** Technology companies say users would circumvent new restrictions and piracy would still occur. Content companies say the law would create important tools for fighting piracy.

** Technology companies worry they would have to police their services for links to overseas pirated content. Content companies say the technology companies would have to act only if notified.

** Technology companies say part of the House legislation encourages providers to act against foreign sites on their own initiative by providing immunity from liability, which could lead to overaggressive actions against foreign sites. Content companies say that sites that act against pirates in good faith and with evidence to back up their actions shouldn’t have to worry about lawsuits.

** Technology companies say there is no due process for overseas sites that are accused of piracy. Content companies say normal due process applies.

Hackers to launch pirate satellite to help build pirate Internet

Hacker-sponsored satellite project aims to prove free speech is as valuable as cell spectrum

By Kevin Fogarty

January 03, 2012, 4:31 PM — Driven reportedly more by the effort of entertainment companies to police their content and punish those who infringe copyrights than by the increasing number of countries adding further restrictions on what their people can or can’t do online, a group of German hackers is trying to start a movement to build a communications satellite that could support unrestricted channels on the Internet.

The project, called the Hackerspace Global Grid, would consist of at least one satellite in low-Earth orbit providing connections among independent ground stations – creating a network of nodes completely independent of the Internet itself.

“The first goal is an uncensorable internet in space,” said hacktivist Nick Farr, who began the call for a satellite project in August in response to new Internet restrictions in China, Libya, Syria and other authoritarian countries as well as pressure to suppress commercial content in Western countries with laws such as the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa). “Let’s take the Internet out of the control of terrestrial entities.”

Farr was among the activists pitching the project at the Chaos Communications Congress in Berlin in August at which the group presented the project in detail. The Congress is an annual hacker conference sponsored by the German Chaos Computer Club – an anomaly among hacker groups in that it has been in operation so long it has become respectable as much as a political movement opposing restrictive rules on digital life as for the hacking activity of some members.

The Hackerspace Global Grid (working project site here)is daunting for its ambition to put a satellite into space, primarily due to the difficulty and expense of launching it on someone else’s rocket. Building the satellite would be much simpler, and the ground stations would be easier still, according to project sources quoted in a Techspot story about its launch.

Ground stations would cost between $100 and $150 for receivers that would use GPS to determine where the satellite should be and zero in on its signal, they said.

The satellite is likely to be based on work done to develop low-cost satellites by the Amateur Radio Satellite (AMSAT) association in England and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd., a specialist in small satellites that was spun out of the University of Surrey and with Constellation, a German aerospace research collective.

Building the satellite and launching it are still problems being solved, but prototypes for different types of ground stations could be ready by the middle of this year, Farr told the BBC.

Aside from the complexity of building the sat, expense and red tape of getting it loaded on an appropriate rocket and placed in the right orbit is the possibility that one or more governments in countries the project is based will delay or stop it all together.

Most have a hard enough time tolerating pirate Internet sites, let alone super-terrestrial independent pirate Internets.

Once all the other pieces are in place, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the actual launch delayed by years while its originators fight to get a court to rule that an Internet unrestricted by national or commercial censorship is as good a justification to put another piece of junk in orbit as defense, espionage or, in the case of telecommunications companies, the desire to use publicly owned skies and space to make money for a very few.

QR codes have stormed traditional advertising and it will never look the same, literally. Innovation surged this year in mobile marketing with huge breakthroughs coming in the QR code advertising sector. To put it mildly, QR codes are blowin' up! The opportunities to augment and track ‘old’ traditional print media with QR codes and deliver targeted mobile web content to smartphone users are ‘game changing’ for today’s professional advertiser. Successful QR code advertising campaigns go beyond the QR code and offer a unique mobile web experience tailored to the advertisement and media outlet. The early days of generating a QR code for a generic website and slapping it on your advertisement are over. Advertisers must now focus on strategy, design and context to get optimum results and deliver the value that will keep consumers scanning. Whether it’s for mobile shopping, commerce, mapping, apps, mobile vCards, signups, music downloads, social, coupons or rewards, consumers are finding new reasons every day to scan QR codes on advertisements with their mobile smartphones. Team this with the analytic software available that most QR code management platforms offer and you have a powerful new dynamic evolving in the advertising world.

Google Offers, the company’s long-awaited response to Groupon, has gone live with a signup for beta program in Portland, Oregon.

Google promises “50% off or more at places you’ll love,” on a sign up page and offers six locations — Portland; California’s Oakland/East Bay and San Francisco: and New York City’s downtown, midtown and uptown. So far, only Portland is offering a beta version of Offers, but no deals are available right now.

The program has been in the works since at least January, when Mashable got hold of a face sheet on services. According to that document, Google Offers will look and operate much like Groupon or LivingSocial and send an email to users with a local deal of the day. Consumers then have a specific time period (likely 24 hours) to act on the deal.

Google’s service comes after the company famously tried to buy groupon for $6 billion. Groupon rebuffed the offer and is now readying an IPO that could be as high as $25 billion.

Local SEO

If you are a business owner and are already doing a advertising campaign on the Internet or are about to begin one, then a concept you should learn more about is local SEO. Search engine optimization is a very popular concept of internet marketing but most marketers do not know much about it, in order to take advantage of this concept. Even those business owners who have the knowledge of SEO find it difficult to actually execute the SEO strategies and get the desired results.

Advertising is an important aspect of running any kind of business as it helps in attracting new customers and to market the products or services. Whether a business is conducted online or offline, the importance of advertisement should be understood and not ignored. When the business is run online especially, then it should be noticed that a lot of free advertisements are already available through SEO rankings.

Some known search engines like Google rank websites use complex algorithms that are designed particularly to differentiate between websites according to the relevant search terms. Therefore, the optimization of the website by putting effort and time for particular search terms results in achieving high ranks for such search terms and it is very much required as all the internet users definitely rely on these ranks. It can also be expected that the internet users only view the initial few results when searching for something. This suggests that if the website has such a high rank that it appears on the first webpage then the site can experience high web traffic. However, if it does not appear on the first two pages then there would hardly be any web traffic on the site or any visitors who follow search engines.

Local SEO-Ranking Your Site

Once the importance of search engine rank is well understood then the ways to achieve such rank should be the main concern. The simplest way for website optimization is by hiring a Local SEO specialist like Houston Online Solution who can do the work. SEO has been complex and continuously developing, which has made it difficult for those business owners who have not been able to match the changes of the industry due to their lacking in SEO specialization. Thus, those business owners who have tried themselves to do their website optimization have faced competition from those business owners who actually hired SEO consultants for this purpose.

The algorithms which are used by search engines are quite complex having a number of other factors included in the equation like the keyword density, titles, Meta tags, inbound links, content and web traffic where the keyword density is the number of times a keyword is included in the content of the website.

The logic of this concept states that, the website which uses a particular keyword more often, is considered to be more relevant to the keyword but overuse of the keyword can result in a penalty to the site if the search engine declares that the keyword was not appropriately used.

Most search engines use Meta tags that are bits of HTML codes, to evaluate the website content and keywords placed in these tags can be sometimes beneficial. However, irrelevant keywords placed in these tags should be avoided as it can cause a penalty to the site.

Some of the search engines also use inbound links to rank the websites. These inbound links are the links provided on other websites which connect to the main website. The search engines give importance to the rank of the sites which contain inbound links to evaluate the worth of inbound links which means the website containing inbound links should have a high rank, to take the maximum benefit of these links.

Good Content For Local SEO

Lastly, the content of the website can also contribute to a large extent to improve the search engine ranks as most of the Local SEO firms have skilled writers who provide quality content which is optimized for the relevant keywords. If an SEO firm, that does not provide copywriting services, is hired then some investment should go into hiring professional writers to cover up the lacking. This ensures that the copy on the website is valuable to the visitors as well as to the search engines.
